The Still Small by Neil Paynter

I don’t know about you but finding time to be still and reflect is a rare commodity these days. I may be able to sit still and shut out interaction with people but that doesn’t stop my brain ticking over and thinking of everyday work and other issues.

This book, written by Neil Paynter, of the Iona Community, is a perfect antidote to our busy lives. Filled with daily short reflections, blessings, short prayers and one or two sentences of stillness, you will never again be able to use the excuse of “I don’t have time” to do some quiet contemplation.

"Literally, a 20-30 second reflective passage can be used to start your day and you may want to let it  continue to filter into your thoughts throughout the day, providing a welcome contemplative escape."

Individuals can of course use the short thought to meditate on in one go. For me, I find it particularly useful as I wake up, and it gives me a little bit of stillness at the very start of the day. Alternatively, you may wish to use it in the evening. Whatever and whenever your inner clock needs some refreshment, you will not be disappointed. Your spiritual-life balance may feel restored!

Many readings are from books written by the Iona Community and are contemporary with specially chosen reflections for particular international or world days. I’ll tempt you with the reflection for 19th September which is my birthday.

“What I believe can be summed up in five words: God is love; people matter.” (Stewart McGregor, from Growing Hope)

- The Rev’d Dr Jenny McKay
